February 10-14
Dear Parents
We began our journey into poetry using the wonderful book Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. This engaging and heartfelt story introduces students to the beauty of poetry while encouraging them to find their own voices as young poets. The book has sparked meaningful discussions and inspired creativity within our classroom.
Our "So Much Depends Upon" Poems
As part of our exploration, we studied the poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" by William Carlos Williams. The students reflected on the poem's simplicity and how it conveys so much meaning with just a few words. Taking inspiration from this, each student wrote their own "So Much Depends Upon" poem. These poems are unique, personal, and demonstrate their ability to focus on details and imagery.
Here are a few examples of the wonderful work your children have created:
"So much depends upon a warm cup of tea, steaming in the cold, beside the old window."
"So much depends upon a golden soccer ball, bouncing on the grass, under the bright sun."
Math:
This week in math, we focused on multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000. Students practiced moving digits to the left on the place value chart to make calculations quicker and easier. Please encourage your child to continue practicing basic multiplication facts at home. Improving speed and accuracy will be very helpful as we build on these skills in the coming weeks.
Social Studies:
In Social Studies, students worked on a creative writing assignment where they wrote a letter to a family member explaining the challenges of being a voyageur in the 1700s. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn about the hardships these early explorers and fur traders faced, while also enhancing their writing and communication skills.
Science:
In Science, we continued our exploration of space technologies, particularly telescopes. The students have enjoyed learning about how these incredible tools have helped scientists explore our universe. Be sure to ask them what they’ve discovered about space exploration!
Important Reminder:
A reminder that the Science test will take place on February 27th. Please encourage your child to review their notes and any materials shared in class to feel confident and prepared. They should be going on Google Classroom for review.
