March 31-April 4
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This month in math, we are beginning an exciting new unit on fractions! Fractions are an important concept that helps students understand parts of a whole, parts of a set, and the way numbers can be divided and shared. Here’s a quick overview of what we are learning in class and how you can support your child at home.
What Are Fractions?
A fraction represents a part of a whole or a part of a group. It is written with two numbers separated by a line, such as 1/2 or 3/4.
Parts of a Fraction
Numerator: The top number in a fraction, which tells us how many parts we have.
Denominator: The bottom number, which tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Social Studies: Alberta’s History & Timeline
Our exploration of Alberta’s history continues as students create a visual timeline covering events from 1400-1877. Through this project, they are deepening their understanding of key moments in our province’s past and developing historical thinking skills. Ask your child about an interesting fact they have learned!
Literacy: Exploring Poetry
We are diving into poetry and learning about different literary devices, including imagery and onomatopoeia. Students are practicing how to create vivid pictures with words and experiment with sound effects in their writing. Encourage them to find examples of these techniques in books or songs at home!
Science: The Power of Magnets
Our energy unit is expanding as we focus on magnets. We have conducted several experiments to explore how magnets attract and repel, and students are discovering real-world applications of magnetism. It has been a fun and engaging learning experience!
Physical Education: Dance Unit
We have started our dance unit, and students are having a great time moving to the rhythm! We recently learned the Waka Waka, a dance with roots in Latin American culture. It has been a fantastic way to combine movement, coordination, and cultural appreciation.
