Oct. 21-24 Hello, This week we continue to work on place value in math. We used riddles to figure out specific numbers. Eg. I am a three-digit number. My tens digit is one more than my hundreds digit, and my ones digit is one more than my tens digit. Students enjoyed trying to figure out the number with the provided clues. Students wrote a math test this week which was reviewed and sent home. Please sign the test and return it to school to indicate that you have seen your child's level of understanding. In phys ed we have started a new unit (basketball). We have started to work on ball handling skills and dribbling. How exciting our Ramsay school dance was on Thursday. Next week students are able to wear a Halloween costume to school if they choose. We will be having a parade in the afternoon so that all students can share their costumes. Please do not bring any accessories such as wands, knifes etc. If they have a mask they will be allow...

This week we went to the Shepard Landfill on a fieldtrip. We were surprised to see how big the landfill is and the amount of garbage and all the birds. We will try very hard to limit the amount of waste that goes to the landfill as it takes up so much space and is very hard on the environment. The composting facility was interesting and we learned a lot of things. At the landfill there is also the Eco-Centre. This is a place where you can drop hazardous waste that might cause fires or make bad chemicals get into the earth. These are items like batteries, bear spray, car oil, aerosol bug spray, propane, and paint. At the landfill, we could see old garbage piles that have been covered over with dirt and grass. Every day, garbage trucks dump garbage onto the pile and soil is added to keep animals from taking the garbage (like a gull could fly off with it and drop it somewhere else). The soil also stops the garbage from blowing away and makes it less sti...

Dear Parents, This week in Social Studies we continued our study of Alberta and its regions. Students were provided with wool and various colored objects and were asked to make the province of Alberta and show its 6 different regions. It was great to see the creativity of each group and the resemblance to the province of Alberta. In math we continue to work with place value and understanding the value of each digit in a designated number. We had our first buddy activity this week. We got together with Ms. Boone's grade 1 students and made thanksgiving pumpkins. In science we are learning vocabulary such as: incineration, compost, recycling and are having discussions around disposal of various human wastes. We are looking forward to our fieldtrip on Wednesday to the Shepard Landfill. Writing well is hard work and this last week we have focussed on writing a complete sentence. All sentences must have 5 parts. Ask your...

Happy Fall! This week we read the picture book "A Child's Guide to the Medicine Wheel". Students became familiar with the 4 quadrants of the wheel and what each quadrant represents. Ask them to tell you about Mind, Body, Spirit and Heart. We also started an individualized program for literacy where students are given their own word list and are required to spell the words correctly. They will get 2 weeks to study the words at home and complete tasks related to the words in class. Look forward to receiving your childs word list this week. Students are asked to study the words at home and then they will be tested on 10 of the words in 2 weeks time. In Math we continue to work on place value. We have been doing tasks related to thousands. By year end, grade 4's are expected to know up to 100 000. On Oct. 16 we will be visiting the Shepard Land Fill for an extension of our science unit on matter. Forms went home on Thur...
